The Origin of Ejiao
The earliest records of Ejiao can be found in annotations to Shennong Ben Cao Jing (The Classic of Herbal Medicine) from the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties:“This is what is known as Ejiao. Hence the popular name of A Well, and authentic Ejiao is produced in the A region of the ancient State of Qi; moreover, it is best made with water from A Well.”
Historically, the seat of Dong'e County was relocated several times, spanning Yanggu, Pingyin and Dong'e counties. Present-day Acheng Town in Yanggu County is the original administrative center of Dong'e and the birthplace of the millennium-old Ejiao culture.
Shandong Huazhentang Ejiao Co., Ltd. covers an area of 50,000 square meters with a total investment of 200 million yuan. Source of the Holy Water
The earliest records of Ejiao can be traced to annotations on *Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica* during the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties: "This is what is called Ejiao. Hence the well-known name of A Well, and genuine Ejiao is produced in the A region of the ancient State of Qi; water from A Well yields the finest quality of Ejiao." Today's Acheng Town in Yanggu County is the original administrative seat of Dong'e County, as well as the birthplace of the millennium-old Ejiao culture.
The Origin of Craftsmanship
The craftsmanship of making Ejiao originated in Acheng Town, Yanggu County.Revised and Expanded Annals of Yanggu County contains records of the ancient Ejiao-making technique in its birthplace:"For Ejiao, black donkey hides are selected and soaked in water from the A Well. They are simmered slowly over firewood from mulberry trees for seven days and nights until the gel is formed. As a specialty of this region, its medicinal properties, flavor and color are unmatched by Ejiao produced elsewhere, hence its great popularity across all provinces."
This traditional craft has been inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
